Raw Nutrition

Chances are, everyone’s heard of the Atkins diet, or the South Beach diet.  Lately it’s the Paleo diet, and tomorrow it’s going to be something else. The amazing versatility of the human body to process anything we eat into usable nutrients is something science is still working to understand completely and will likely be doing for centuries to come. Can you lose weight on one of these diets? The one word answer, is yes. The more complicated version however, is that you can if you don’t mind gaining it back when you cannot hope to sustain a diet that doesn’t include vitamins, minerals and the sorts of things the human body has needed to thrive since our inception. There are diets out there whose main goal isn’t to get you to lose 30 pounds in a couple weeks, because that doesn’t help long term.  Diets you can stick with like The Fat Loss Factor are lifestyle changers, it ensures that you lose weight long-term and the information helps you maintain that lifestyle no matter how much time passes.

The world was certainly a very different place when prehistoric man wandered the earth, nomadic tribes who marked their history via cave paintings, and left behind only bones and some very crude tools with which we could study them and their behavior. It’s from the curiosity of scientists we learned how they moved, and what they needed to survive – among those, what they ate. This is where the Paleo diet originates, and insists that we were always made to eat like our earliest ancestors. While there’s nothing inherently wrong with this supposition, the Paleo diet isn’t completely raw. To quote the former US Surgeon General, Dr. C. Everett Koop, “Food sustains us, yet what we eat may affect our risk for several of the leading causes of death…Notably coronary heart disease, stroke, arteriosclerosis, diabetes and cancers.”

The trouble with a standard diet versus a raw diet like Fat Loss Factor is that cooking leaches out nearly 70% of the healthiest parts of our foods; vanishing in our boiling water, steam, or just dying as a result of too high of heat. Our early ancestors ate most of the food they consumed raw, simply because there wasn’t always time or ability to make a fire to cook it over. These early people walked further, and had more resistance to things that are putting us in the hospital constantly. Today, we live a very sedentary lifestyle mostly, though some of us choose to go to a gym, bike, hike, or otherwise work out. The trouble is, we aren’t replenishing the things our bodies really need in order to operate at their peak. While the word raw may have some of you already wrinkling your lips in distaste, because a grimace is the usual accompaniment to a word that we’ve long come to associate with “uncooked and full of bacteria” it’s not saying to eat raw salmon or uncooked chicken. There are also ways you can eat raw foods that will tickle your taste buds in nothing but pleasure, changing how you view the entire idea of eating for your nutritional health forever. Eating isn’t simply done for sustenance, it’s also for pleasure – why not really enjoy it? Programs like the Fat Loss Factor have enabled us to live at our peak, performing with plenty of energy and full of healthy substance for life. Changing a lifestyle is less enjoyable when you think you’re switching to diet foods, but these aren’t diet foods, they taste great! Who doesn’t love cupcakes?

Key Lime Coconut Mini-Cheesecakes

Serves 12 (serving size 1 cakelet)
Kitchen tools required: Food processor

Ingredient:

Crust

  • 1 cup raw almonds
  • 1 cup raw walnuts
  • 2 tsp. coconut sugar
  • 1 tsp. himalayan sea salt (the pink kind)
  • 2 tbsp. coconut flakes (unsweetened or sweetened)
  • 2 tbsp. maple syrup (honey or agave works too)
  • 1 cup pitted dates, chopped (about 5 dates)

Filling

  • 1 can coconut milk (refrigerated overnight, full-fat)
  • 1 cup raw cashews (soaked in water overnight)
  • 2 tbsp. shredded coconut flakes
  • 2 tbsp. coconut sugar
  • 2 tbsp. raw pure virgin coconut oil
  • 1 tbsp. lime zest
  • Freshly squeezed lime juice from 2 large limes

Instructions:

Crust

Line a cupcake pan with 12 cupcake liners and set aside.  In a food processor, combine almonds and walnuts. Process until finely grated. Add in coconut sugar, sea salt and coconut flakes. Process until fully mixed. Add dates and maple syrup and process until well mixed and sticky. You may need to scrape down the sides a few times with a spatula to make sure all ingredients get well mixed. Spoon out crust from food processor into cupcake liners and tamp down with a spoon. Place in freezer while preparing the filling.

Filling

Open can of coconut milk, it will have separated into two parts. Spoon out the top white part that looks like whipped cream and place in food processor. The coconut water left over is not needed for this recipe, and can be used for juice or a smoothie!  Drain and rinse off cashews that have been soaking, place into food processor. Add coconut flakes, coconut sugar, coconut oil, lime zest and lime juice. Blend in processor until smooth and creamy (a blender also works). Remove cupcake pan from freezer and pour filling on top of crusts.

Add a bit of lime zest and coconut flake on top for extra garnish to taste (if you like) and put back in freezer for 2-3 hours until firm. Enjoy while cool!

Vegan Coconut Vanilla Nutty Dream Shake

Serves 2
Kitchen tools needed: Blender

This super simple recipe is loaded with fiber, electrolytes and plenty of creamy goodness to keep you going.

Ingredients:

  • 1 young coconut (or coconut water and meat that will equal 1 coconut whole)
  • 1/2 cup almond or cashew milk
  • 1 teaspoon real vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
  • 1 tablespoon maca powder
  • pinch of sea salt
  • 1 packet of stevia

Instructions:

Scoop out coconut meat and place into blender along with water from same coconut, almond or cashew milk, almond and vanilla extracts, maca, salt and stevia.  Blend on high until very creamy.  Pour into a glass and top with cinnamon or nutmeg for presentation.
